Coast Guard Era

In 1915, the U.S. Lifesaving Service merged with the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service to form the U.S. Coast Guard, and the House of Refuge at Gilbert’s Bar became U.S. Coast Guard Station #207.  In addition to the former keeper, four men were stationed at the house.  This crew of five was augmented by the Home Guard, which was composed of area youths, during World War I.

When the United States entered World War II, the Coast Guard Station at Gilbert’s Bar once again gained importance.  In 1942, freighters were torpedoed by German U-Boats along the Treasure Coast.  A tower and additional buildings were constructed along the property, allowing the facility to serve as a lookout for enemy submarines.
