The History of The Elliott Museum

The Beginning

The Elliott Museum was founded in 1961 by Stuart resident Harmon Elliott as a tribute to his father Sterling Elliott, a prolific inventor, social reformer and the inspiration behind the museum’s themes of innovation and creativity. The museum features a historical gallery, antique cars and vintage vehicles, and a collection of Sterling Elliott’s most notable inventions.

The Elliott Museum also showcases artistic creativity by featuring the work of local and national artists in various art exhibits held in the gallery spaces.

The Studio at the Elliott offers everyone from children to adults the opportunity to explore their own creativity through art classes and workshops.

We also own the largest collection of signed baseball memorabilia outside of Cooperstown. Baseball fans can spend hours enjoying the baseball cards, documents such as journals and contracts, as well as bats, balls and trophies.

As we celebrate the rich history of the current Elliott Museum, we also look forward to the creation of the New Elliott, a state-of-the-art facility that will allow us to expand and protect our collections, and interpret them to visitors in engaging and informative ways.

The New Elliott Museum will offer:

  • Nearly twice the space of the current facility.
  • Proper environmental controls for the preservation of our valuable collections.
  • Hurricane-resistant and eco-friendly construction.

Creation of the New Elliott Museum will allow us to expand upon our mission to grow, interpret and celebrate the genius of innovation, creativity and the historical events of Martin County and the surrounding region. Learn moreabout the excitement that’s in store!
