A lot of accomplished people made and still make the Elliott Museum a special place. Here are three standouts:

Hugh Willoughby – Adventurer, inventor, photographer, airplane pilot, race car driver, Sewall’s Point resident.
  • First flown in 1909, Hugh’s plane, War Hawk, was the first plane designed for military use. His pilot’s license was presented to the Historical Society of Martin County in 1956.
  • Willoughby was the first white man to cross the Everglades, documenting his trip and mapping the area. He also wrote a Seminole-English dictionary. His mapping and camping tools from the Everglades expedition were given to the society as well.

Frances Langford – Singer, actress, USO performer, sport fisherman and philanthropist The Frances Langford Foundation gifted hundreds of artifacts to the Elliott Museum after Frances’ death in mid 2005, including:
  • Artifacts from her Outrigger Café
  • Movie Posters
  • Headshots and Promotional photographs
  • USO memorabilia and photographs
  • Awards
  • Clothing
  • Early Evinrude boat engines
